Spoonbill / Espátula
Maximum size: 85 cm
They live in marshes, lagoons, preferably salty-water lakes and shoreline
marshlands. They can nest on trees, as it happens in the National Park
of Doñana, in nest-areas with cork oaks or with marsh vegetation
as in the Marismas del Odiel, in Huelva and in other places in Europe,
like in Holland. They can be seen in lagoons in the centre of Andalusia
and in small marshlands, although this only happens occasionally. They
feed on aquatic vegetation, fish, molluscs, tadpoles and invertebrates.
They are included in the Red List of Birds of Spain and Andalusia, and
their conservation status is ‘Vulnerable’.
