Chroicocephalus ridibundus = Larus ridibundus
Black-headed Gull / Gaviota reidora
Maximum size: 45 cm long – 1 m wingspan.
They winter in the Iberian Peninsula. They live in and around harbours,
near the sea-side, and they can fly upriver as well as inland. They prefer
to breed in wetlands, marshes, lagoons and lakes.
They flock in large numbers in lagoons, dams, large pools and ponds,
such as the lagoons in Fuente de Piedra (Málaga). They use these
locations as dormitories. In Doñana they are sedentary and they
nest in the park. In summer they become more numerous with the arrival
of other individuals from other wetlands and coasts around the country.
