They live in flooded fields, wetlands, pools, ponds, dams and marshlands
surrounded by paddy-fields and human settlements. Thousands of individuals
meet up in the Doñana National Park every year where they can be
In wild state, they make long, gregarious migrations in large flocks.
They can be seen in paddy-fields and marshes in Doñana and they
winter from August to March.
They can be seen daily by the thousands in the inner park, particularly
in the Cerro de los Ánsares -the biggest dune in Doñana-,
where they ingest sand in order to help them grind up food.
