Ferruginous Duck / Porrón pardo
Maximum size: 41 cm
They are very scarce. They prefer salty-waters with plenty of aquatic
vegetation. They are often seen in lakes, in winter, as well as in rivers,
estuaries, deltas, and seaside lagoons.
Distribution: Mediterranean basin, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.
In Spain they can be seen in Castilla la Mancha, Valencia (Albufera of
Valencia and El Hondo) and in Andalucía in the Marismas del Guadalquivir
between Huelva and Cádiz, as well as in the Guadalhorce delta in
In Andalusia their conservation status is ‘Critically Endangered’.
In the rest of Spain ‘in Danger’.
In Doñana they can be seen in the Santa Olalla lagoons, in la
Rocina, in El Acebuche and in El Palacio. They seldom breed in Spain.
